Sarala Kariyawasam (the first Sri Lankan child actress to make an international debut) in Diaspora Indian director Deepa Mehta's film water was released in 2006. The film is primarily based on the river Ganga and the Varanasi region of India, a traditional place for religious rituals.  The film is a film that depicts the religious and social oppression of the Indian widows in the year 1938.

        "Water is an 'exquisite film about the institutionalized oppression of an entire class of women and the way particular imperatives inform religious belief."

                The movie starts with a somber tone, as an eight-year-old girl (Chuiya) is left alone after her husband passes away. The story is centered around the girl and the Kalyana Ashram, which is a shelter for widows.Even though it is an ashram, it earns money from widows engaged in prostitution and the girl learns about this later. The girl's relationship with one of the widows, Shakuntala, and her lover, Narayan, is also well depicted here.

       The water of the river Ganges is meant to be clean through the sparkling clean water and the film flows through symbolic images. The white dress of the widows also shows the status of the people, but it is only an indication. Because the ashram earns money from the women who engage in prostitution. A turning point here is the freedom of the widows.  By including the variety of colors and natural tones that should exist in a design, the design has retained its inherent vitality by combining the aesthetics in an excellent way.

         This work leads to a social discussion and explains a sad story of Asian caste women. Although I did not have a good idea when I watched this when I was a child, now I feel that it is an honest work directed by women and even the emotions of women who are oppressed socio-culturally are delicately explained here.
