The film is primarily based on the river Ganga and the Varanasi region of India, a traditional place for religious rituals. The film is a film that depicts the religious and social oppression of the Indian widows in the year 1938.
"Water is an 'exquisite film about the institutionalized oppression of an entire class of women and the way particular imperatives inform religious belief."
-(Catsoalis 2006)-
The movie starts with a somber tone, as an eight-year-old girl (Chuiya) is left alone after her husband passes away. The story is centered around the girl and the Kalyana Ashram, which is a shelter for widows.Even though it is an ashram, it earns money from widows engaged in prostitution and the girl learns about this later. The girl's relationship with one of the widows, Shakuntala, and her lover, Narayan, is also well depicted here.
