Ten years for bond theft

The year 2025 has been ten years since the bond theft that caused turmoil in the Sri Lankan society. But until now, justice has not been served to the aggrieved party or the main accused has not been arrested. Although Arjuna Mahendran is the main accused, he escaped from the country during the Yahapalan government. Although we received information that he was currently living in Singapore, the information is still unknown.  According to the Singapore government, he cannot be handed over to the Sri Lankan government. It is still questionable how Arjuna Mahendran, who was a Singaporean citizen, was given the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The current government came to power promising to bring all those involved in the bond scam to justice. But it has not been fulfilled in more than five months since Anura Kumara Dissanayake was appointed as Executive President. Anuru Kumara Dissanayake has stated that it is not possible to do so due to the existing legal obstacles.

Even though the bond hearings were pending, the main accused, Arjun Mahendran, would not be able to identify the people who influenced them when he did not participate in these hearings.  The court makes decisions based on the existing legal and evidence. So when Arjun Mahendran can no longer be brought to the court, isn't the evidence that can influence the case be hidden?

It is a question for the entire public whether bond theft is seen as an advantage for all political parties. The theft was used as a bait to get Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to get power in 2019 and Anura Kumara Dissanayake to get power in 2025. The surprising thing here is that the political bigwigs who have been accused are still protected from legal proceedings in this country.

Focusing on the legal impact of bringing Arjunu Mahendran to Sri Lanka, everyone is waiting for this government to complete the investigation process of the bond scam written in black letters in the economic history of Sri Lanka.
